One of the resons I switched to 700C rims is more tire selection. I put bigger tires on my touring bike I had 700x28s to small in my mind. I put some test tires on 700x35. I borrowed a tire from Dillan and gave him my old fenders. I could not get the bigger tires to fit under my fenders. The fit his bike very nice. I dropped off my bike to get measured up for fenders at the bike guy and ski.

I LOVE the bigger tires (700x35). Granted, they're on my touring bike.
ReplyDeleteMy daily commuter has the Fat Franks (26 x 2.375"?) and I even like those. Enjoy.
cool
DeleteI think this is the one big issue that frustrates me about 80's touring bikes, no matter how nice they be. They just weren't designed for the clearances for tires and fenders like we do today. Most of them were designed for 27" wheels, which the biggest tire you'd get (then and now) is 1 1/4" wide. And most rode their touring bikes sans fenders. Converting to a 700C wheel like you did gets more clearance, but not a hell of a lot, as it really opens about 4 mm of space (ISO 630 vs 622).
ReplyDeleteHmm good to know
DeleteI got fenders and 700x35s to fit. :)
